HORIZONIC: Unfolding Space through Sound Art

HORIZONIC is an innovative project including sound and visual arts exploring an emerging field in contemporary art, taking account of the prominent place that sound as a medium has taken among Nordic artists of all hues.

This touring exhibition is organized by ARTnord and accompanied by a special issue. The aim of the project is to discover an active, committed and unusual sound art scene from the extreme North Atlantic fringes.

HORIZONIC focuses on the Northern fringes of the Nordic countries, highlighting artistic practices rooted in this particular geographical and cultural environment. Nordic artists share their experience of isolated territories, open expanses and a scattered population, rediscovering space through their personal perception of soundscapes and original sound experiments.

Whether they amplify the perception of a place, render a new type of silence or speak in unheard voices from the living realm, the works gathered for this exhibition help rediscover space through the experience of sound.

The selected artists are: Amund Sjølie Sveen, Åsa Stjerna, Catrin Andersson, Dodda Maggý, Elin Øjen Vister, Goodiepal, Halldór Úlfarsson, Iben Mondrup, Jessie Kleemann and Kristín Björk Kristjánsdóttir/Kira Kira.

Associated with Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Svalbard and the Norwegian North, these artists have all developed a common interest for the acoustic quality of their territories, and thus have initiated an gripping new phenomenon, symbolized by the Arctic horizon.
